Dear Sir/ Madam,
We are writing to express our concern over the dangers that a supposed not-for-profit and educational organisation poses to yourself, your staff and your students. The organisation in question is Narconon, an anti-drug and rehabilitation program linked to a dangerous cult that has claimed the lives of dozens of its' critics and supporters, the Church Of Scientology.
Narconon was established in the late 1960s,based on "The Fundamentals of Thought" by L. Ron Hubbard and delivered to drug abusers in the Arizona State Prisons. The name "Narconon" originally referred not to an organization but to the program. Its creator was William C. Benitez, a former inmate at Arizona State Prison who had served time for narcotics offenses. His work was supported by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, and in 1972 Hubbard sponsored the incorporation of Narconon as an organization. It was co-founded by Benitez and two Scientologists, Henning Heldt and Arthur Maren.
In December 1988, the president of the Church of Scientology, Heber Jentzsch, was arrested in Spain after an investigation into Narconon revealed that he and the Church of Scientology were fraudulently stealing money from Spanish citizens and running its centers with unqualified staff. Spanish citizens began inundating the courthouse with phone calls complaining of being hoodwinked by Narconon. The judge in the case said at a news conference after the arrests that the only god of the church of Scientology is money, and he compared the church to a pyramid scheme in which members pay increasing sums of money. He said that Narconon swindled its clients and lured them into Scientology. By the end of 1991 that same court said there was no evidence to support prosecutors’ allegations that drug rehabilitation and other programs sponsored by the Church of Scientology in Spain amounted to illicit gathering aimed at activities such as bilking people of money. In 1989, in Italy this time, 75 Scientologists were arrested and an investigation showed that "parents of drug addicts were paying heavy monthly fees to Narconon, which advertised itself as a drug rehabilitation and cure center, but getting nothing in return."
Although these claims may seem hard to believe, we invite you to investigate the matter yourself. There is no end to the amount of information about the actions of Scientology and it's partner organisations readily available on the internet. Some sites that may be of interest to you have been included with this letter.
We urge you, for the safety of your students and faculty, not to allow these dangerous cultists access to your school and the freedom to pollute the minds of the young people in your charge.
Yours faithfully, Anonymous
[edit] Revised letter (needs proof reading)
Dear Sir/ Madam,
We are writing to express our concern over the dangers that a supposed charitable organisation poses to you, your staff and your students. The group in question is Narconon, an organisation claiming to be an anti-drug and rehabilitation program which has been targeting schools throughout the UK for its lectures. What many of these schools are unaware of is the charity's association with the Church of Scientology, which has been described by former cabinet minister John Gummer as “a dangerous organisation”.
You may have previously heard about the Church of Scientology in the news, but few people know very much about the organisation itself. Despite describing itself as a religion, it is considered by many to be a vicious and dangerous cult primarily designed to make money. Its founder L. Ron Hubbard has been quoted by Lloyd Eshbach, a contemporary science fiction writer, as having said “I’d like to start a religion. That’s where the money is.” The organisation has been linked to a number of deaths including those of Lisa McPherson, Heribert Pfaff and Josephus Havenith. Additionally, eleven highly placed Church executives including the wife of L. Ron Hubbard, Mary Sue Hubbard, were convicted of obstructing justice, burglary of government offices, and theft of documents and government property in the USA, after infiltrating and stealing from 136 government agencies, foreign embassies and consulates, as well as private organizations critical of Scientology.
Narconon does not publicly advertise its links with the Church of Scientology. However, a memo from the Home Office's drug strategy unit stated in 1998 that it has “roots in the Church of Scientology and not in the mainstream of drug rehabilitation”. Narconon has also been accused of using its programme to recruit vulnerable drug users into the Church, with patients being heavily pressured into joining as a staff member upon “graduation” from the program.
Although Narconon claims that they have a rehabilitation success rate of over 75%, their methods have been heavily criticised by the medical profession, and when seeking a tax rebate in Stuttgart, Germany they were unable to provide any evidence to support these claims, with the Stuttgart Verwaltungsgerichtshof (administrative appeals court) finding that “The papers filed by the petitioner offer no evidence of a successful drug withdrawal at the petitioner”.
We invite you to investigate the matter yourself; there is no end to the amount of information about the harmful and often criminal activities of the Church of Scientology and its partner organisations available on the Internet and elsewhere. Some websites that may be of interest to you have been included at the end of this letter.
We urge you, for the safety of your students and faculty, not to allow these dangerous cultists access to your school and the freedom to pollute the minds of the young people in your charge.
Yours faithfully, Anonymous.
